Four documentary programmes by GERALD LEACH
3: Avoiding Action
The first two programmes in the series were about the unexpected and often unpleasant surprises from technology's impact on nature: pesticide build-up; over-productive streams as fertilisers run off the fields; or our own resistance to antibiotics like penicillin. All these are with us now, but already we are engineering for ourselves the next generation of problems. Somebow the biologists must forecast what they will be. And this is probably easier than persuading governments to listen to this biological voice-and take avoiding action.
