Play of the Month: Kean

on BBC One London

by JEAN-PAUL SARTRE : translated by FRANK HAUSER. Part 1 starring with Adrienne Corri
Barrie Inghani. Sara Kestelman
Cherie Lunghi , Frank Middlemass and Robert Stephens
The tempestuous personality of Edmund Kean , arguably England's greatest actor, is given full scope in Jean-Paul Sartre's farcical comedy.
It is a crowded sequence of midnight assignations, sexual intrigue, secret doors, backstage temperament, fights and challenges to duels.
Beneath its glittering surface, the play's fascination with the thin borderline between play-acting and reality explodes when Kean's own jealousy disrupts his performance as Othello at Drury Lane.
