In 1901. at the age of 35. Joseph McPherson had gone out to Egypt as a schoolmaster. After serving with the Red Cross at Gallipoll and with the Camel
Transport Corps in the Desert War, he was appointed Chief of the Secret Police in Cairo. In this last instalment from his letters, he describes this final phase of his astonishing career and. as well, the serene retirement which followed, ending with his death on 22 January 1946.
