The Glen Campbell Story

on BBC Radio 2

1/4. REM bassist Mike Mills introduces a profile of Arkansas-born pop giant Glen Campbell, who paid his dues as a session guitarist for the likes of the Beach Boys before forging a career as a rather unhip, Grammy-winning purveyor of country-inspired easy-listening hits that now rank unequivocally as great recordings. Among the many 60s gems are By the Time I Get to Phoenix, Hey Little One, Dreams of the Everyday Housewife, Galveston and the haunting Wichita Lineman. The 1975 single Rhinestone Cowboy put him back in the charts after a four-year lull. Featuring input from Jimmy Webb (who wrote Campbell's key songs), producer Al Delory, songwriter Jimmy Bowen, bassist Carol Kaye and Glen Campbell, who speaks openly and at length about his rags-to-riches and troubled personal history.
