on Third Programme

by Jennifer Dawson adapted from the novel and produced by Michael BANEWELL Josephine is a young girl detained in a mental institution and suffering from schizophrenia. Her mother has been killed in a domestic disaster for which she believes herself to be somehow responsible, and her life at Oxford as an undergraduate has become impossible because of her lack of grip on the real world.
Life is something with which she is unable to come to terms. ' I wanted the knack of existing. I did not know the rules.'
