In addition to being a master of the traditional forms and technique of composition. Claudio Monteverdi '(1567-1643) was a great innovator-, for he introduced a new conception of harmony and of instrumentation, chiefly in opera, of which he was the founder of the modern school. ' Ecco Silvio a a madrigal in five parts from Guarini's ' Pastor Fido ', comes from the fifth book of his madrigals, in which he introduces some of his new ideas : the style of the writing is more dramatic-even operatic, for the character of the aria with its recitative is present — -.and for the first time a figured bass for filling in the harmonies on a lute, harpsichord, *or organ is added to the vocal parts.
