Darius Milhaud 's Second Violin
Sonata was written in 1917 when
Milhaud was attached to the French Legation in Rio de Janerio. It is, of course, free from the extreme iconoclasm in which Milhaud indulged later when he came under Cocteau's influence. The music shows a decided lyrical gift, fondness for contrasting rhythms, and a reaching out to the realm of atonality.
