A programme for children under five
Nursery rhymes, stories, and music
A mother, imitating the animal noises of our storyteller and thinking to increase her little girl's enjoyment of * the story, was halted by an unexpected comment from her daughter: Don't be a moo-cow-just be a cuggly mummy.' Evidently this small listener wanted this quarter of an hour to be one of shared listening, the cosy enjoyment of a few minutes together with mother. And, after all, this is an important aspect of things for small children, for as they grow a little older they necessarily experience a little less of the safe cuddlesomeness of previous days, and though they have arrived at a stage when they are reaching out for independence they still need the safety of mother's wing to run back to. Thus there are many. like this little girl, who really do want to listen with mother.' Today it is Catherine Edwards to whom they are listening, for she comes back this afternoon to begin her second month as their storyteller. But today and on Friday, too, it is two o'clock, not a quarter to, when she is ready to begin. The reason? The Light Programme commentaries on the T.T. Races. Elizabeth A. Taylor
