The Borodin Quartet is more than 50 years old, although it was 10 years before it took the name under which it made its reputation. The BBC has preserved many of the performances the quartet has given in this country. Gordon Stewart introduces a programme including Borodin's first string quartet, Prokofiev's second, and the second string quartet by Shostakovich, with whom the quartet worked closely until his death.
