The Third Power

on BBC Radio 3

"There are three great Powers in Europe: England, Russia, and Madame de Stael"
A radio portrait by Eric Ewens, narrated by Fay Compton

Mme. de Stael was one of the most influential women in history, as can be inferred from the names of those whose words contribute to Eric Ewens' portrait - Napoleon, Wellington, Gibbon, Goethe, Fanny Burney, Queen Marie Antoinette, Chateaubriand, Benjamin Constant. The narration of the programme is put into the mouth of a niece of Mme. de Stael, the first in the long line of her biographers.
