In a Presidential election year the news from America tends to be dominated by primaries, National Conventions, parties. and candidates. But to many thoughtful Americans these things seem pitifully irrelevant in the face of the profound upheavals with which American society is beset.
Daniel Snowman was until recently a Lecturer in American Studies at the University of Sussex and is the author of the recently published book U.S.A.: The Twenties to Vietnam.'
