4: Laws of Thought and Forms of Life by PETER WINCH
Reader in Philosophy in the University of London
' To generalise is to be an Idiot.' said Blake. A point: but also a generalisation. How can one generalise in thinking without distorting the uniqueness of each individual case? How can one grasp the uniqueness of the individual case without using generalised ideas? Does this add up to a vicious circle in our thought? One way out of this dilemma is through the relation of ' law and order ' In thought to ' law and order ' in the patterns of our social life.
