Cult Heroes: Judy Garland

on Radio 5

Frances Gumm started her stage career aged two and was hooked. As Judy Garland she was signed to MGM at the age of 13, where she made her name in The Wizard of Oz.
Never the conventional glamorous Hollywood star, she danced and sang her way through a glittering career. But it was shortlived - drug dependency took its toll and she was fired, only to resurface as a superlative stage performer. Years after her death, Judy Garland is revered by many perhaps most surprisingly by the gay community. But one thing is sure her legend will live on.
