As the NHS marks 70 years of service, academic and broadcaster Alice Roberts looks to the future and hears how scientists in Wales are at the forefront of health care research.

In this programme, Alice investigates the work being done to identify dementia diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntingdon's.

She meets Professor Julie Williams and her colleagues at Cardiff University who have discovered over 27 risk genes for dementia which implicate the innate immune response in determining a person's susceptibility to developing Alzheimer's disease.

1 in 6 people over 80 in the UK have some form of dementia and someone develops it roughly every three minutes with estimates suggesting by 2025 there will be 1 million people in the UK with dementia.

Alice hears about the work the team at the UK Research Institute in Cardiff are doing around 'early onset' Alzheimer's, she hears from a patient with 'early on set' and meets patients and researchers working together to improve life for people with Parkinson's disease in Wales.
