Duration: 30 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC Radio Wales MWLatest broadcast: on BBC Radio Wales MW

As the NHS celebrates 70 years, academic and broadcaster Alice Roberts looks to the future with a series focussing on health research being carried out by scientists in Wales.

Dementia, heart disease and cancer are among the areas she examines over four programmes.

In this first programme she visits the Wales Fertility Institute in Port Talbot. The team based at Neath Port Talbot Hospital are working with academics in Cardiff and Swansea on pioneering research aimed at increasing the chances of successful pregnancies for people struggling to conceive. Their research also includes the use of the wonder substance graphene.

Alice hears from scientists about the 21st Century challenges being faced around sperm production and embryo health. She also tours the Institute's busy laboratory to see exactly how the centre is using technology to identify the most healthy embryos which may lead to a successful pregnancy.
