The Funny Life of...

Series 1

Gary Little

Duration: 28 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC Radio OrkneyLatest broadcast: on BBC Radio Orkney

Julia Sutherland meets comedian Gary Little for a personal and detailed look at his life, which reveals how comedy gave him a reason to reject a life dogged by crime and prison, and finally go straight.

Always the joker, and never far from trouble, Gary grew up in Maryhill and then Balarnock. His dodgy dealings started at a young age, as he would sell pirated cassette tapes to fellow primary school pupils. Despite an apprenticeship with a local butcher. buying and selling became his specialty, and he was always looking to get people a good deal, while making himself a bit of cash in the process.

However, this entrepreneurial spirit took a more criminal turn, landing him in jail more than once.

In between sentences, and after charming guests at a house party with his natural gift for storytelling, he was given an opportunity to try stand-up. During his final period inside, a sense of loss of this new potential career was the motivation he needed to turn his life around.

He now headlines clubs all over the country and has found a way to make people happy... without breaking the law! Show less
