Winter Weekend

Heroines, with Boo Paterson, Karen Cargill and Stuart Paterson

Duration: 1 hour, 30 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC Radio OrkneyLatest broadcast: on BBC Radio Scotland Highlands and Islands

Edi Stark's theme for this programme is Heroines, and she invites her guests to share the work of women who have inspired them.

Mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill reveals how, ever since she saw a photograph on a record sleeve in her singing teacher's house in Arbroath, she's been an admirer of Maria Callas.

Boo Paterson has been a journalist, music manager and circus ringmaster. She's now known for her intricate papercut art. Her choice today is the work of writer, poet and activist Maya Angelou, in particular her poem Still I Rise.

And poet Stuart Paterson explains the role music plays in his life, and why he has chosen Janis Joplin as his recommendation today.

Plus Edi takes a walk through the buildings of Edinburgh's Old Town as she discovers the story of the Edinburgh Seven, the first female students admitted to a university in this country, who had to battle to be allowed to study medicine.

And today's archive choice is an interview with Jean Muir, who Edi spoke to in 1994 for what was to be the designer's final radio interview. Show less
