It's no surprise that sea ports have had a unique place in the daily lives of people all over Britain, with the extensive coastline that we have. On Scotland's west coast, these communities have always been important. They were a lifeline, and also vital to different industries. While the way in which they are used has changed, the ports are still at the heart of the communities.

We visit Lochboisdale in South Uist, where a £10 million investment has played its part in reinvigorating the area, and head for Oban whose history as a port can be traced back to 1631, and it's grown massively since then.

Back in the islands we also learn of how Stornoway grew as a port, and the fascinating history of Leverburgh - both ports in which the fishing industry played a major part, but which are now exploring new opportunities. It's a fascinating look at the vital role that ports have in our communities' lives, and the way in which they have been redefined by each generation. Show less
