Cradle to Grave

Episode 1

Duration: 28 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC Radio OrkneyLatest broadcast: on BBC Radio Scotland Highlands and Islands

Dr Margaret McCartney explores what we need from the NHS at different stages of our lives and what we can do to ease the pressures it's facing. Moving from 'cradle to grave' we start with 'babyhood'.

What happens in those early months is crucial to our long-term health. There's clear evidence supporting the health benefits of breast milk. For premature babies these benefits can be even more important, but it can be difficult for tiny babies to feed, and to establish the mothers milk. To help address this, Glasgow has set up a Donor Milk Bank, now serving the whole of Scotland. Margaret pays them a visit to find out how it works.

She'll also hear how recent additions to Scotland's vaccination programme have reduced hospital admissions - and try to get to the bottom of that condition that makes the parents of newborn babies shudder - colic! Show less
