Episode 2

Duration: 25 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC Radio OrkneyLatest broadcast: on BBC Radio Scotland Highlands and Islands

Christine de Luca reflects on the enduring significance and appeal of Dickens' story for our own times.
In Dickens' day his story of 1843 was hailed as a vivid expression of the real values of Christmas. Later, the Scottish novelist Margaret Oliphant wrote that, although it glorified turkey and plum pudding, "it moved us all in those days as if it had been a new gospel."
We hear from those who love the meaning and values of the book, and listen to some of the magical music it has inspired, along with songs and carols that embody the spirit of Christmas. Show less
