Funny Kind of Family

Episode 2

Duration: 28 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC Radio OrkneyLatest broadcast: on BBC Radio Scotland Highlands and Islands

Adoption and biological family searches, families with criminal tendancies, sharing a house with overbearing parents in adulthood; not things that you'd normally expect to laugh at but in this programme that's exactly what we'd like you to do. Host Julia Sutherland explores the dark corners of three comedians' family history to find out the true stories behind the laughs.

Deborah Frances White is a successful writer and comedian based in London and she has always known that she was adopted at birth. With the advent of the internet she was able to find her biological mother and shares her story of meeting her new family for the first time on the other side of the world.

Ashley Storrie is the daughter of another stand up comedian, and with an autistic father and a family with a broad criminal history, growing up the same as "normal" families would was never going to happen. She tells us of the normality of being surrounded by secrets and surreptitious movements, whilst coping with the troubles that every teenager faces growing up.

Closing the show Nat Luurtsema tells her true story of her traumatic relationship breakup and subsequently having to move back in with her parents at 28. She discovers that whilst she has grown up and changed, her parents haven't realised. The troubles of being independent whilst living under their roof are apparent and lead to some hilarious circumstances.
