While the three Irish divisions continue fighting in Europe, the Easter Rising leads to executions in Dublin, a blood sacrifice for an Irish Republic. Only months later, a Unionist sacrifice is made at the Battle of the Somme, a momentous and at times myth-bound event for the future state of Northern Ireland. The Irish divisions fight together at Messines, but at home the country splits over the issue of conscription.
