Na Gillean Grinn

Episode 2

Duration: 6 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC ALBALatest broadcast: on BBC ALBA

Documentary short narrated by Julie Fowlis that explores how the Highlanders went to the Great War. In 1914, Scotland was written into a dark chapter of history and was about to be thrown into the bloodiest conflict the world had ever seen.

The speed at which war approached was terrifying. The efforts to stop the war proved futile - there were only 37 days between the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on 28 June and the outbreak of war on 4 August. Storm clouds had gathered over Europe and the summer was cut short.

The Highlands had a strong military tradition and regiments such as the Cameron Highlanders recruited in specific areas. Nowadays, historians such as DW Stewart and Dominiek Dendooven from In Flanders Fields Museum reason that the Great war was the defining event of the 20th Century. Show less
