High in the pine forests of the Spanish Sierra, Robert Jordan, a young American volunteer, camps with a band of guerrillas as they prepare to blow up a vital bridge as part of a Republican offensive during the Spanish Civil War.
Robert has forged loyalties, made a dangerous enemy and fallen in love. He also has reason to fear that the enemy are aware of the offensive. But as the appointed hour approaches, it may be too late and he must face the inevitable.
