Europe's Roma have been discriminated against for centuries. They live in poor communities on the margins of society. Richer nations fear an influx of poorer migrants from eastern Europe in search of jobs and benefits and the Roma have borne the brunt of such suspicion. Switzerland's vote to curb immigration from the EU has touched a nerve, with some predicting a hardening of attitudes right across Europe towards migrants.
