Lizzie Nunnery's drama series looks at five key events from her life with respect to Politkovskaya's work in Chechnya, from 1999 - up to her murder in 2006.
In this opening episode, Anna wants to help evacuate 85 elderly, frail, sick people from an old people's home in war torn Grozny who have been abandoned there by the authorities.
But there is opposition "they could be terrorists disguised as old people" and Anna is advised to pretend she is only going to save the Russians. Meanwhile, her marriage finally breaks apart under the strain.
