The Ripple Effect

Series 1

Episode 3: Anne

Duration: 28 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC Radio OrkneyLatest broadcast: on BBC Radio Scotland Highlands and Islands

Schizophrenia affects about one in a 100 people each year; two thirds of those diagnosed will go on to have further episodes throughout their lives. Sadly, it's a condition that sets alarm bells ringing- the very word schizophrenia is a stigma. Perhaps that's partly down to how it's been reported in the media. So what must it be like then to be the parent of a son or daughter who suffers from this condition?
Anne's son was first diagnosed with Schizophrenic 14 years ago in his early 20's. His behaviour and personality can alter dramatically and he experiences delusions on a daily basis which his family have to deal with. Clare English explores the impact on family life when someone has such unpredictable and irrational behaviour and, quite simply, just how you continue to love someone when they are so difficult to be around and emotionally withdrawn?
