He Died With His Eyes Open

2. Empathy

Duration: 30 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC Radio 4 FMLatest broadcast: on BBC Radio 4 Extra

The detective continues his investigation into a brutal murder in 1980s London.

Through a series of encounters with the people who knew him alive, and through the cassette tapes he left behind, the detective builds up a picture of Staniland, the 51-year-old victim whose case he is investigating, because nobody else wants to.

It leaves him so consumed by empathy that he starts to be led down the same destructive path as the victim...

Derek Raymond's cult-crime novel.
