Howzat! Kerry Packer's War

Episode 1

Duration: 1 hour, 30 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC FourLatest broadcast: on BBC Four

Two-part fact-based drama centred around Australian media mogul Kerry Packer, who fought a cricket war by signing up 50 of the world's greatest players to form a breakaway tournament.

In 1976, infuriated that ABC had been given the TV broadcasting rights by the Australian Cricket Board without his own Channel 9 being given the chance to bid, Packer is delighted when John Cornell, one of his producers, comes to him with a rough idea about setting up a rival tournament. Amongst great secrecy, Packer and Cornell start signing up some of the best players in Australia, but soon find themselves at war with the established game. Show less
