Peter Skellern presents a series looking at the many styles and successes of the great piano entertainers.

Born in Trinidad in 1914 and trained as a pharmacist with a hobby in piano, Atwell moved to London, where she found it impossible to crack the serious concert repertoire. A career of slightly-out-of-tune boogie woogie and ragtime followed, resulting in a string of fifties hits that included
Black and White Rag and Let's Have a Party.
