Allan Campbell travels through the Gairloch district of Wester Ross in the company of William (Willie) MacRobbie from Achgarbh in Laide who has an extensive knowledge of the area. In this first programme they commence their journey west of Achnasheen in Glen Docherty, and Willie describes some of the history of the area as they travel through Kinlochewe and westwards along the south shore of Loch Maree. He tells of the tragedy at the Loch Maree Hotel, much loved by Queen Victoria, when in 1922 eight guests and members of staff died from suspected botulism, and Allan also hears of the iron-ore foundry once based at Furnace on the northern shore of Loch Maree.
