Michael Parkinson: My Favourite Things

09/04/2013

Duration: 57 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC Radio 2Latest broadcast: on BBC Radio 2

Sir Michael Parkinson's 'Favourite Things' this week are the records that took the new Bossa Nova rhythm and adapted it to create some jazz classics. Among the artists to record latin american feeling songs are Frank Sinatra, Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto, Artie Shaw and Quincy Jones. Parky also comes up to date with recordings from Stacey Kent, Sara Gazarek and Molly Johnson. He looks back at the music scene in 1963 when Bossa Nova was taking off and observes that it was the same year that the great artist Dinah Washington died aged 39 ... Washington was called 'the Queen of the Blues'. Supremely talented, she produced some great hit records including 'Mad About the Boy' and 'Baby You Got What It Takes'. She enjoyed a reputation as a feisty and disputatious woman ... and married seven times. Show less
