Lou Reed's New York Shuffle

Episode 4

Duration: 2 hours

First broadcast: on 6 MusicLatest broadcast: on 6 Music

Laurie Anderson, the first of 6 Music's Three Wise Women, has selected an episode of New York Shuffle, the show that her late husband Lou Reed presented with his friend, the music producer, Hal Willner.
Lou Reed's New York Shuffle ran the gamut from jazz to contemporary indie to vintage rock and was first broadcast on 6 Music in 2012.
Lou wanted to emulate the American FM radio of his youth, where as he described it, he found "DJs who did their own programming and set the bar high. I learned from those DJs and it's a delight, with my friend Hal, to do this type of radio".
Hal Willner is one of the most well-regarded experimental producers in music today, working with Marianne Faithfull, Bill Frisell, Gavin Friday, Lucinda Williams, Laurie Anderson, William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, among others.
In this episode broadcast on BBC Radio 6 Music in November 2012, Lou and Hal's wit and wisdom is blended with and extraordinary music from the likes of Dr Dog, Spike Jones and His City Slickers, the Unthanks, Dion and Leonard Cohen. Show less
