Britain needs to find a site for a long-term underground store for our high-level nuclear waste. The project - more complex than the Channel Tunnel and potentially the size of a small city - is a political hot potato. In the New Year, councillors in Cumbria will decide whether to reject the option of building the store under the beautiful local countryside - or whether to agree to more work to find a geologically suitable site.
