Tommy has bed bugs; Kat’s furious and blames Shirley. Kat tells Shirley she isn’t welcome at the Vic but Jean sneaks her in to wash her clothes. Alfie’s sorted out Bug Busters for the Vic, but they are going to have to shut down and move out until the bugs have been exterminated. Alfie stays alone at the Vic to act as bait for the bugs, despite Kat’s protests that she’ll miss him. Kat leaves the bandage with ‘I love you’ written on it in a bin bag at the Vic, and leaves to meet her lover at their George St flat. Post-coital, while her lover showers, Kat discovers a family photo that Alfie’s left in her bag. Kat bursts into tears.
Ian begs Lucy to give him a chance. Lucy reluctantly lets him take Bobby to school. Lucy’s struggling with her responsibilities. Cora makes it clear that the service at the café is not up to scratch; Patrick tells Cora to remember what it was like struggling at her age. Ian’s at the school gates shouting frantically for Bobby; he forgot to give him his apple and is scared he’s blown it. Masood is kind to Ian; Ian breaks down and asks for help. Lucy brings a journalist writing a ‘Fine Café’ guide to the Café. She’s touched to find the place gleaming and Cora and Patrick holding the fort for her.
Sharon’s anxious for Denny’s first day at Walford Primary. She and Tanya bicker during a parents’ coffee morning. Tanya’s annoyed Max has missed Oscar’s first day of school. Max lies that he’s in traffic; he’s really at an unknown flat with an envelope full of cash. Unable to knock, Max puts the money through the letterbox and drives off.
