Porridge has long been a staple of the Scottish diet. A cheap and filling meal, for many it conjures up warm memories of childhood. Others though aren't quite so keen, and remember it as a lumpy, gloopy, and grey concoction! But love it or hate it, the once lowly porridge has enjoyed a huge surge in popularity and now enjoys a new reputation as a superfood. Indeed, the UK porridge market is currently valued at £171 million!

We visit the World Porridge Making Championships in Carrbridge to see who will claim the coveted Golden Spurtle. There we witness the traditional and modern faces of porridge, with the oaty breakfast being made to new and varied recipes featuring honey, blueberries, chocolate spread, porridge burgers, Morrocan spiced porridge and lamb! Nowadays there is even a beer made from oats, and at music festivals up and down the country, music revellers can be spotted chewing on trendy porridge bars. Show less
