Episode 5

Duration: 45 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC One HDLatest broadcast: on BBC Two England

2011: Nick panics about Poppy's safety, but she is soon returned safely by Michael. Rather than thanking Michael for Poppy's safe return, Nick turns on him and a full-scale row breaks out. Frank is impressed with how Ellie handles the situation with such sensitivity, unlike her husband. He is talked round by Ellie, who also persuades him to have a heart-to-heart with Poppy. Eventually, everyone is reconciled.

After helping Joy by offering her a way back home to Nigeria, Frank makes two big announcements: firstly he's giving Ellie the lease to the house, and secondly he's moving into a care home. Ellie objects, but Frank is having none of it. Ellie can't believe her IVF dream is on again.

Breaking through the attic wall for Poppy's new room, Nick's hammer crashes through the cement as what lies within is ready to reveal its mysteries.

1931: Sid bids farewell to the family at Brinkburn Street, hinting that he might see some of them before long. Meanwhile, Walter, wracked with guilt, tries to keep Billy's body hidden, but is soon discovered by Gracie and Elizabeth. Gracie's dreams of escape with Sid come crashing down to earth as the reality of what Walter's done hits home. She goes to meet Sid in the park and tells him she won't be joining him as her husband needs her. Sid is devastated and gives Gracie the tickets, just in case she changes her mind.

Returning home, Gracie gives one of the tickets to Violet - a chance for her pregnant daughter to start a new life in America, away from prying eyes. Nervous, Violet accepts.

Ensuring they're alone, Walter, Gracie and Elizabeth bury Billy's body in the attic and start on the fragile road to recovery and becoming a family once more. Little do any of them know that Gracie is pregnant with Sid's son, Frank. Show less
