Professor Anne Glover, Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland, examines why far more women than men drop out of science careers. While children and teenagers increasingly believe that science is no longer the preserve of men, there is still a huge discrepancy between the proportion of qualified men and women staying in science long-term. Professor Glover asks whether that is down to fundamental differences between the sexes, to attitudes in the workplace or to unrealistic expectations on the part of women, and examines what Scotland needs to do to address the loss of some of its finest scientific talent.
