Alfie and the midwife eventually persuade Kat that the baby in the moses basket is Tommy. Kat holds the baby and says goodbye. The police take Tommy’s bedding, investigating the cause of Tommy’s death might help stop it happening to someone else. Charlie avoids Kat. Alfie tells the police what happened the night Tommy died – the baby was alone. Kat can’t face talking about the funeral. Billy offers to sort it out and Jane insists on doing the food for free. Tiffany and Morgan find Kat crying in the playground and take her home. Kat suggests a hymn for the funeral. Charlie doesn’t answer when the police knock on his door. Kat’s upset that she wasn’t there when Tommy died. Alfie lies to comfort her, insisting Tommy died in his arms.

Ronnie’s surprised when her midwife pops in. The midwife is concerned at ‘James’’ weight loss and the disappearance of his ‘positional talipes’, but concludes the hospital must have made a mistake. The midwife reassures Ronnie, just because someone else’s baby died, it doesn’t mean Ronnie’s baby’s going to. The family gather at Dot’s to wet the baby’s head. When Ronnie doesn’t turn up, they move the party to Jack and Ronnie’s. Ronnie refuses to let anyone see the baby, and hearing her and Jack bicker, the family leave. Jack accuses Ronnie of being overprotective.
