Last Woman Standing

Episode 4: Coron Island - Bamboo Raft Racing

Duration: 1 hour

First broadcast: on BBC ThreeLatest broadcast: on BBC Three

Series in which five athletic adventurers from the west compete for glory against tribal champions in some of the remotest corners of the globe, with the ultimate aim of being crowned the last woman standing. They have just a week to master an indigenous sport, training and rituals whilst eating and sleeping as their fellow competitors do.

In the fourth programme, the athletes try their hands at rafting on the open ocean with the Tagbanua tribe in the Philippines. The bad news is that their rafts are made from a few bamboo poles lashed together.

The Tagbanua live harsh and isolated lives gathering fish and seaweed from the waters in the region of Palawan. The women of the tribe learn to work on the sea from an early age and it is these resilient women who will not only teach the athletes how to keep afloat, balance and row in the rough open seas, but also how to dive for sea urchins and gather birds' nests.

The elders of the tribe spare no effort to prepare our athletes for their 12km ordeal on the high seas. The raft race is a test of skill, stamina and sheer determination in which only the mentally strongest will win. Show less
