En route she tries her hand at double sculls with one of the UK's best young rowers, finds rare orchids at Hartslock and encounters controversy at Swinford's beautiful Georgian bridge. Journey's end is Rushey Lock near Faringdon, where she meets Graham Margeson, Thames lock keeper for 40 years.
