Air Medics

Episode 3: Stranded

Duration: 30 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC One ScotlandLatest broadcast: on BBC One Wales

Get ready to be propelled into the skies for the ride of your life. This is the third programme in a brand new, high octane, helicopter emergency ambulance series set in the stunning landscape of the North of England.

The Great North Air Ambulance's three helicopters carry specialist trauma doctors and paramedics to some of the most remote parts of Britain's landscape, reaching seriously injured patients in minutes. Air Medics follows every gritty moment with camera directors on scene and multiple mini-cams on board, combined with air-to-air filming recorded in High Definition. As a result, this series is a mixture of mind-blowing cinematic landscapes with heart-warming stories of survival; and extraordinary feats performed by ordinary, local heroes.

At the Lake District base of the Great North Air Ambulance, the crew is alerted to an emergency by Mountain Rescue. A lone walker is not only injured, but has also been stranded for hours high on an isolated mountain. Meanwhile, not one, but two motocross bikers are seriously injured during an event on a remote part of the Pennines. Every year the helicopter crews embark on hundreds of missions to save seriously injured people stranded in remote locations, miles from the nearest road. These are places only the air ambulance can reach. But for the pilots, landing their helicopters on steep and rocky terrain can be the biggest challenge of all - and in this episode, the pilots of the Great North Air Ambulance are tested to their limits.
