A series profiling some of Hollywood's most charming leading men.
This week Michael York looks at Omar Sharif, who was born in Alexandria in 1932 and became one of Egypt's biggest stars before moving to Hollywood. His breakthrough came in 1962, with an Academy Award-nominated performance in Lawrence of Arabia and he was subsquently much sought-after as a leading man in films like Doctor Zhivago and Funny Girl. Later in his career, he settled into less demanding roles but Sharif returned to form in 2003 with a César award for his performance in Monsieur Ibrahim Et Les Fleurs Du Coran. He is also a world-class contract bridge player and has written several books on this subject.
