Wild About Animals

Episode 8: Hyenas

Duration: 30 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC Two EnglandLatest broadcast: on CBBC Channel

Spotted hyenas are rarely alone, and Hattie has a privileged position in her clan thanks to her mother Harriet. Females rule the roost in hyena society and Hattie's mum is clan leader. That means she gets more milk than her brother, Herbie, and one day she'll inherit her mum's position as leader. But first Hattie must survive long periods without milk and encounters with hungry lions while her mother is off hunting far away.

Hyenas have a reputation for scavenging but they are skillful hunters, preying on grazing animals. If only the herds of antelope and wildebeest would migrate through our clan's territory, then mum wouldn't have to leave little Hattie any more. Show less
