Scherzo (L'Apprenti sorcier) (The
Magician's Apprentice)........Dukas
As Goethe tells the story, and Dukas presents it to us in merry music, the apprentice seizes the chance of his master's absence to pronounce the magic spell which sets the broomstick to work carrying water to the house. But he finds, when it is too late, that he has forgotten the words which undo the spell, and the carrying of water goes on until the house is well-nigh engulfed. In desperation the apprentice seizes an axe an'd chops the stick in half, only to find that his predicament is twice as bad as before, since both halves carry on the work with equal energy. The master magician returns-the tremendous blast of the brass instruments which announces that is unmistakable-just in time to avert final catastrophe.
Spanish Capriccio....Rimsky-Korsakov
1 Alborada. 2 Variazione. 3 Alborada. 4 Scena e Canto gitano. 5 Fandango asturiano
