Caprice brillant on the Jota aragonesa
Glinka
When Glinka visited Spain in 1845 he was keenly interested in Spanish folk music. In Valladolid, in particular, he listened with delight to the guitar playing of a lad named Felix Castilla , one of whose tunes, the Aragonese jota and its variations, so took the Russian composer's fancy that immediately on his arrival in Madrid in the autumn he made it the basis of this brilliantly orchestrated ' Caprice '.
Ballet Suite, Les Biches (The House
Party).....................Poulenc
Les Biches was originally produced by Diaghilev in 1924, with choreography by Nijinska. It is a satirical comedy, without any definite story but representing a house-party. (The London production was actually entitled The House Party.) It introduces a number of ' smart girls ' (les biches) who amuse themselves with scandal, etc., and three acrobats who flirt with them.
