Pidgin

on BBC Radio 4 FM

Narrated by David Attenborough
' Helicopter equals mixmaster belong Jesus Christ.'
(APOCRYPHAL)
Pidgin English is found in various forms from the China Sea to the Caribbean, and from Saigon to Johannesburg. Its origins are uncertain; its future is under debate. In New Guinea it is the principal means of communication between islanders speaking a total of 700 distinct local languages. To some people it is babytalk, but others see it as a whole new language in embryo.
