The Transatlantic Balloon

on BBC One London

There have been 16 serious attempts to cross the Atlantic by balloon. All have failed and five people have been killed. Last month Britons Don Cameron and Christopher Davey came closer than any men before them - hitting the sea just 110 miles from the coast of France. Duncan Gibbins and the Nationwide team followed the attempt right through its year-long preparation to the final near-success of the mission.
