Paul Gambaccini

on BBC Radio 1 England

with an appreciation of Smokey Robinson
Even before SMOKEY helped to found the Tamla
Motown label in 1957 he was playing and writing songs with the Miracles in a Detroit basement, watched by a young Diana Ross.
As there were only eight employees in the early Tamla days, he was involved in everything and his talents for producing and arranging flourished within the Motown ' family spirit'.
He later introduced Diana Ross to the ' family ' head. Berry Gordy , to start her phenomenally successful career.
On writing he has said,
' I just write about things that people can relate to, and would be the same if I wrote them in 1920 or 2000.' A magic that has been highly successful for him and other major Motown artists
