4: Madrigals, Books 7 and 8 Twenty years after the publication of his seventh book of madrigals, the Madrigals of War and Love were produced under Monteverdi's supervision in 1638. The book represents a retrospective of his 30-year career, and includes ballets and works written as early as 1608. It also demonstrates Monteverdi's theories on the relationship between man's humours, his anger, moderation and humility, and the different styles of music to which he believed they corresponded.
